Block 213 HDB Serangoon

I have been staying here for about 20 years. My family was extremely happy with the environment until the last 8 years when we have altars cropping up, indiscriminate burning of joss paper in the floors of the block, joss burning on grass areas,paths and mass burning in the park. Previously they had oil burners on the altar. They have stopped because I informed the town council of the pigeons eating the offerings and upsetting the burners which will cause a fire but that did not stop the indiscriminate joss paper burning everywhere. The block cleaners cleaning work load is being multiplied. Further I have this suspicion that the person or persons who set the altar does not live in the block. This indiscriminate joss burning issue is a national issue similar to the time when giant joss sticks was being used in Pasir Ris 20 years ago. The wind was carrying smoke,ash and burning cinders to the homes. That time the fire and pollution hazards were alarming that the government tasked the Buddhist leaders to advise that this show of faith is not necessary and dangerous. I sincerely hope that the government and Buddhist leaders should look into situation before fire breaks out. The recent news is that we should be aware of our carbon footprint and also Malaysia states are currently affect the haze again. What is alarming is that I see young families with kids participating in the burning of joss paper.
