My first walking tour in Singapore and was worth it love the place.

Koon Seng Road, popular for the colourful houses that line the streets, was known as Lorong E East Coast before being renamed after Cheong Koon Seng (鍾坤成 b. 1880 – d. 1932) in 1934. Cheong Koon Seng was the elder of two sons of Cheong Ann Bee, a wealthy first-generation Straits-born merchant from Malacca. Koon Seng, one of the first cohort of 13 students of Anglo-Chinese School, he was also a builder and proprieter of the Theatre Royal and Star Opera Company on North Bridge Road in the 1870s with his brother Koon Hong. He was an auctioneer and a real estate agent. In the 1950s, Koon Seng Road was a violent place to live as gangs congregated in the area. A few dreaded triads such as Gang 18 and 36th Pai operated in the vicinity of this road. Kampongs situated around the road proved to be good hideouts, especially for hiding weapons. Though violence was limited to inter-gang fights and did not affect the layman directly. Koon Seng Road was a predominantly residential area, most of the shophouses were built in the 1920s and 1930s and were gazetted for conservation in 1991. The road was also a Peranakan enclave in the past until the 1970s when the Peranakans began moving to other parts of Singapore.

Undoubtedly Singapore’s most colorful street with two rows of colorful peranakan houses along both sides of the road. If you’re an Instagrammer, blogger, architecture or art fan, it is definitely a place not to be missed in Singapore.
