MSL Services has help my child in better confidence in reading and language skills.

My son was diagnosed as dyslexic with phonics ability of only one percentile. He has undergone intensive therapy with orton-gillingham (more widely known as OG) approach at MSL. A year on and he is now equipped with the skills necessary to decode words not just for spelling but also reading. Kudos to the team at MSL for the patience and guidance to help my son overcome his difficulties. Highly recommended.

When my Son was first diagnosed with Dyslexia he was scared and felt like a failure as his Teachers in school didn’t see his learning issues as something he couldn’t help but as a nuisance and excuse. He was branded lazy and unfocused. After working with Teacher Huei Huei and Kim he is reading and writing well and his confidence and self esteem have returned. Look no further if you have a child with Dyslexia, MSL is the right place to go to.

A big thank you to Ms Kimberly for all her help and guidance with numbers! As far as I am aware, MSL Orton is one of the few intervention programs in Singapore that extends to adults, including those with numeric difficulties such as dyscalculia. As dyscalculia isn’t well known in Singapore, I only received a diagnosis after I had left formal schooling and received little to no support for my condition when I was in school. Hence, I left school with little knowledge of basic arithmetic and calculations. Despite being at the one-percentile, nothing was available for me at such an “old” age and hence I simply had to get on with life. However, proved to be a great struggle for me in employment whenever I was faced with tasks that required calculations as I frequently made errors. Concerned that this would heavily affect my future prospects, I realised that something had to be done. MSL Orton was the only place that offered remediation for basic arithmetic for dyscalculics at an adult level. The conceptual understanding of numbers I gained through the lessons with Ms Kimberly have helped me to gain confidence in how I should approach “numbers” in life and work. Through the use of tools such as concrete manipulatives, I was able to work through and obtain an understanding in areas such as: basic operations, time and money. Pure number work aside, Ms Kimberly often gave advice on how to build life-skills on areas such as by working on executive planning functions. All these helped to impart a set of “survival numeracy” in order to survive the workplace today, where numbers are indispensable. Hence, I would like to say that even if you happen to be diagnosed at an ‘older’ age like me and you are facing difficulties at work because of dyscalculia (or other learning disabilities), does not mean all is lost. Although all those ‘lost years’ may mean we may not ever reach our intended potential in math, but the once a week sessions at MSL Orton helped me to gain confidence in knowing how to approach numbers. Once again, thank you to MSL Orton and Ms Kimberly for their guidance and not ‘ignoring’ (but I believe, a small but significant) group of people like me who may not have been diagnosed as young children.
