Nanyang Junior College

NYJC itself had a very lively culture instilled when I visited, apart from the feel of weight as one of the top performing junior colleges. Normally it’s quite expected of students to be very stressed on academic work and to be outstanding in co-curricular and special programmes. Nevertheless, most of the students I saw adopted a very positive and proactive attitude and took initiatives in balancing their lives between studies and leisure. It is common to see students gathering around to study together in a lively mood and doing activities of their interest, such as dancing, playing football, tennis, chess, jogging etc. Then again its quite impressing further more to see students able to hold events despite the need to prepare for major examinations, which clearly demonstrated their ability to handle stress and time (and that a couple of them whom I happened to interact with are high flyers in the college). I would say they have the strengths of a good academic environment and culture as well as capable students.

NYJC's running track is open to the residents around the area before college hours (before 8.00am and after 5.00pm). Registration is done at the guard post at the foyer, beside the path that leads down to the track directly. The track itself and the grandstand is in good condition.

Writing as an alumnus here, I do feel that NY made a difference in my life, in terms of giving me a different experience that shaped me into who I am currently.

NY have a refreshing and bright campus. Thats the first impression I got as I walked up the school facade via the main gate for the first time a few years ago during my school event. It really feel very different from what we usually experience in a typical secondary school, much less a much larger school compound. I can't really judge the quality of the materials, teaching standards, or the native culture as I have yet to experience one officially as a JC student. Nevertheless, I am banking it to be one of the few positive ones worth looking forward to.

NYJC offered me a lot! There is a lot of opportunities to develop life skills, leadership skills and credentials even if you are not an appointed student leader as long as you are willing to step out of your comfort zone. The college is always on the ground and open to new initiatives, which allowed me to learn and take charge of big events and programmes that were self initiated. My experience at NYJC certainly shows that non-IP schools certainly does offers equally great stuffs as those with IP.

After completing my 'A' levels, I was actively seeking a part-time job, preferably in a café because I think it is a good opportunity for me to meet different people and have a different life experience before heading back to the school environment again. I am currently working as a waitress/barista at a local cafe, enjoying the chats with customers and having them enjoy the beverages that I have prepared for them. It’s really rewarding being able to interact with customers and the light-hearted conversations that make my day. The work comes with it challenges but it has further taught me valuable lessons about communication and relationship-building with people, as well as business operation and processes. Apart from fulfilling my work commitment, I try to volunteer as much as my schedule allows me to, looking for ad-hoc activities that pique my interest. Mr Chow, my civics tutor, once mentioned in class that our accomplishments should not solely be credited to ourselves. We should remember the people around us who had made it possible for us to perform well. He also encourages us to think of those who are not as fortunate as us to receive the opportunities that we do.
