Black & White Houses, They are a legacy of Singapore’s colonial heritage and thanks to preservation we can still see them or, if your budget allows, even enjoy living there. The name black & white is obvious from their structure. Wooden construction with dark timber beams and whitewashed walls. The original versions were built by British colonial families sometimes referred to the Tudorbethan style while implementing practical tropical design influence; Characteristic are the large verandas with overhanging roofs, high ceilings and many windows at all sides to be opened for maximum breeze. Often built elevated, on stilts to keep a distance from animals, insects or floods during the rainy season. It started in the early 1860’s but the majority of the houses were built during the 1900 to 1930’s, occupied by rich families having plantations, trading businesses and high-ranking administrators. Later also used for British military officials. (Like the ones at Seletar Airbase) But the Japanese took them over during their 1942-1945 WWII occupation. After WWII the B&W became largely abandoned and many fall into disrepair. The government eventually took them over, restored, modernized and preserved them. They can be rented and are still much liked by foreigners for them to get the feel of past colonial lifestyle here. Today there are still around 500 Black & White houses around in Singapore.
