Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Cultural Academy - 5 Sennett Rd

Recently enrolled in Basic Hokkien Conversation Workshop conducted via Zoom. Mr Chia （谢金石老师）is an enthusiastic and lively teacher who frequently creates opportunities for students to speak and converse in the dialect. Over the four sessions, we learned many commonly used terms, a big help for starting (& sustaining!) conversations in Hokkien in daily life. Thank you too to Jeremiah, the course administrator who was very helpful with queries, and for the interesting activities / video links.

4 lessons was a bit rushed but quite interesting. teacher taught in chinese & can also speak english pretty well. way more fun when u sign up with ur bestie

It's really useful and easy to understand to learn basic conversational Hokkien. The instructors are friendly and experienced. Will recommend to my friends.

Mr Tan the instructor provided good background to the variations of the dialect. Structure of the workshop was good where each of us got to speak to get corrected. Will be good if the huay kuan can organise weekend hokkien speak fest so we can keep up and improve our hokkien. Thank you.

I would like to commend the Academy for organizing Basic Hokkien Course for people like me, who wishes to learn Hokkien so that I will be able to communicate with the elderly ones at home and also will be able to teach my kid my dialect. Initially I have doubts with the course as I am not sure if the classes suit me at all. After all, I do able to speak some Hokkien on my own based on past experiences. However, I am stunned to realize how awful is my pronunciation and I have been saying the wrong words the whole time without knowing. Throughout the classes, we take turns to converse in Hokkien with the materials provided and I'm glad that our lecturer took the efforts to correct my mistakes. Luckily, the classes were not as bored as I have imagined. I interacted with my fellow classmates through games and there are interesting videos that were shared with us. Homework was given every week which is not too difficult to handle though I do seek help from others sometimes. Overall, I would recommend others to take up the course if they wish to learn more about Hokkien or brush up their Hokkien. Of course, most importantly to me, I am able to communicate better and have less miscommunication after the course. I can't wait to impart my knowledge to my kid. :)

The basic Hokkien conversational classes were paced well and the teacher ensured that the students fully comprehend the topics/phrases/words before moving on. The teacher also helped us with the pronunciation and corrected us individually, which I think is really beneficial for beginners trying to pick up the language. Before the class, I could only understand the language but not really speak it well. But after the class, I can say that I am more confident in attempting to converse with others in basic Hokkien. On top of the materials that were given to us, the course administrator also included many interactive elements and videos to help us see what the Hokkien language is like outside a classroom setting. Overall I think it was a fun learning experience!

I attended the basic hokkien conversation class. Jeremiah and his team are very responsive and goes the extra mile to make sure that I receive the materials despite me signing up only less than a week ahead of the first lesson. He joins in with his happy temperament and makes the quizzes much fun whilst we learn. Mr KC Tan is the masterful teacher whose knowledge of the hokkien language and it’s history is deep. He is able to make the lesson fun and helps us students enjoy the learning process. His kind and gentle manners in engaging in conversations with us makes every minute of the lesson interesting. Despite my stumbling over many times of the words, he’s always encouraging and patient. Thanks very much, teacher Mr Tan!
