Upon first sip, the soup has a reminiscent of Malaysian styled BKT. Small pork ribs, pork belly, slivers of mushroom and meatballs, for $5, not cheap though. The meatballs were surprisingly excellent and a definite highlight! One can get an added serving of fried beancurd sheet which was great with BKT soup. The curry was thick and rich, mainly lean meat,. The sesame chicken was flavorful and great with rice. Both at $3.50, it represented good value. Parking is ample and it seemed they have their fair share of loyalists, even on a Sunday.

The Herbal Hokkien-style Dark Bak Kut Teh is clearly the star of this coffeeshop. 8 in 10 tables ordered it. We ordered the $10 soup with lots of bean curd skin to share for two. Curry is a quite popular too.

Great taste of bak kut teh with lots of tasty ingredients and soup. Cheaper than elsewhere for the same dishes.

Ever craved for the taste of olden times? This bak kut teh store is the right place for you. Xiang lai Bak Kut Teh has one of the best bak kut teh one could ever find I Singapore. Its fragrant stock have been simmered for more than 8 hours with traditional Chinese herbs such as cloves, peppercorn and whole garlics. The bak kut is so tender after the long hours of simmering that it would be peeled of the bone very easily. Besides the bakut, there are other variety of meat in the soup too such as thinly sliced pork liver, pork belly and crown mushrooms all of which complement the mouthfeel of the other. Have I mentioned that there were more from the store than bakuteh and all of them are served on Claypots? The vinaigrette trotters is to die for! Perfectly balance without having an overpowering acidity from the vinaigrette and without being too sweet. The trotters are carved with perfection without too oily from the fats and too tough from the flesh. Right at the goldilock zone. Lastly, I really have to add on about the effort they put in, to abide by the traditional flavours and cooking methods. Even the chilli is added with minced garlic and soy sauce to add on to the unami that was produced during the fermentation process.

Had above average expectations for this but was somewhat disappointed… The BKT is indeed reminiscent of JB’s BKT but the flavours were lacking. The sesame oil chicken was more soy sauce chicken… Tofu was decent & pig trotters had plenty of meat. I would say this is a value meal but probably not something you travel specially to Kranji for…

After hearing so much about this herbal claypot #bkt in this super ulu Kranji coffeeshop, we finally made our way to try it. Ordered $10 bkt, add $1 of their special fried tau kee, minced meat tofu ($2.50) & 2 rice ($0.50 each). Didn’t disappoint. Actually soup is slightly herbal and more sweet but is very tasty. Comes with 4 big chunks of meaty pork rib, meatballs, sliced pork bellies, liver and button mushrooms. Whole tofu is also very nice and soft. Topped with lots of minced meat in a nice sweet sauce. And you can mix your own black sauce, cut chilli and garlic paste combo to dip.
