I wanted to set up a warning device at an airfield - a flashing red light that automatically operates for a few minutes each time there is a radio transmission on the local VHF operating frequency. The idea being for it to go with signage at a runway crossing point that says "When the light is flashing, look out for aircraft". Because aircraft routinely broadcast their intentions on the local frequency, this generates a great way to automatically warn visitors to be aware of aircraft movements. The missing link between a VHF air-band scanner and a flashing red light was a module that could 'listen' to the audio from the scanner, and each time a signal breaks squelch, that could then trigger a control relay for a controllable minimum period - to turn on the light. I found exactly what I needed at PIC-CONTROL. They make an audio trigger device that does precisely that thing. I ordered it, and it was literally plug-and-play - works great! The photo attached is of the system under test before deployment in the airfield concerned. While everything is possible with a bit of programming in the modern world, I just wanted to buy a little device that magically did exactly what I needed, with no programming effort on my part. I found it, and it worked 'out of the box'. Very happy with the outcome and I'd happily recommend PIC-CONTROL for this or similar requirements. They shipped to me in Australia without stress.
