★ ★ ★ ★ ★ tldr: Visiting this shop has been one of my worst experience living in Singapore. If you value your smartphone data privacy, or simply just want to have your phone fixed thinking you could save a few dimes, avoid this shop at all cost.
I sent my wife’s iPhone for water damage repair, two days later I got a call from the shop claiming it would cost $280 to get it repaired completely. When we were about to make payment, we realized the Face ID could not function. The staff told me IT’S COMPLETELY NORMAL that the Face ID may not function after the repair and is not guaranteed to work after a repair, even though she did not mention a single caveat. When we told them that we don’t want this half-done repair, the staff told us to pay an outrageous $130 for Power IC as it cannot be removed (you should really check out power IC market price). We argued that this has not been communicated to us before the repair, to our surprise, the staff told us that ANY SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS KNOW THIS and as adults we need to know the products we bought. By the same reasoning, I then questioned if the staff knows the composition of her necklace… but I was met with silence. To avoid more toxic conversation, I negotiated for a middle ground but the staff told us that they need to check with their boss tomorrow and REFUSED TO RETURN the phone. The staff also asked for our IC in case we want to sell the phone.
We went home that night, fearing that the device security and privacy could have been compromised as they have already obtained the unlock password from us as part of the inspection (which I regretted for giving them so easily over the phone), we attempted to mark the iPhone as lost/missing but could not find that iPhone in the registered device in my wife’s iCloud account. It was then that we realized that while I was in a heated argument with the technician, another lady staff tricked my wife to key in her iCloud account password for “inspection purpose” which enabled her to disable the ‘find my iPhone’ function. This is later confirmed as we received an email that the tracking function on iPhone has been disabled while we were in the shop. The next day we returned and questioned them why they disabled the tracking function, they again surprised us with shameless response claiming that it was us who did it. It was only when I told them that they will need to explain that to the police if they refuse to return the phone, they returned the phone immediately.
So what’s the moral of this story? Do visit an authorized repair shop if you want to avoid dealing with whatever we have encountered. Pinching pennies at the risk of your data privacy is not worth it. We’re finally able to get some rest after resetting all our password.
