Booked and played on this level 5 indoor Basketball court on Sunday morning. Pleasantly good as the flooring is wooden and board & rim are well maintained. There’s also shower, toilet and water cooler facilities too.

I had never thought that visiting a secondary would be on my list of architectural and historical sights to visit in Singapore (especially one that required a 30-minute bus ride, god forbid). However, I was not disappointed. This tour was conducted as part of Architectural Heritage Season (AHS) 2018 - AHS is an annual festival that celebrates Singapore's built heritage and well restored buildings. Beyond growing professional skills in the area, the AHS is a celebration for the community and an opportunity to raise awareness for URA's conservation work. Just a point to note - only the pre-war buildings built in the Art Deco and Mission Styles - the Classroom Block, the Chapel and the Brothers' Quarters were given conservation status. And these were where the tour was concentrated. Current students and alumni brought us around the above mentioned places. Other than being an architectural marvel, the school was also a historical site - it was formerly a British hospital and during World War II, it was taken over by the Japanese as an official residence which later became the Japanese Air Force Headquarter in Singapore. There was even a little brick house that was built by the Kempeitai (which has since been demolished) to torture prisoners. I was especially touched at the alumnus passion for the school, they really believed in what the school preached - to provide education for the least, last and the lost. In a valiant insistence of this belief, the school management actually rejected the status of an autonomous school. For those who are unaware, autonomous schools have more autonomy as compared to other government-run secondary schools to plan their own curriculum and activities. However, such schools may charge an additional miscellaneous fee on top of the regular school fees paid by all students attending government or government-aided schools. And it is the additional fees that run counter to what the school believes in. Do note that because it is primarily a school premise - do not expect air-conditioning (the school is not THAT rich), hence, bring towels and tissues when you walk around ! You are definitely going to sweat :) I had usually thought that our secondary schools were places where students grew and learnt - this trip had really opened up my mind to see the architectural and historical value of such establishments. Student from 2000-2003. Alot of tolerance and respect from the Christian brothers and recognize my identity as a Muslim. Wishes us well and pray for us and encourage students to pray according to each belief. This is not something found in many other secular schools during that era. May God bless my dear Brother Nicholas and Collin.
