Background: I bought a 5mo maltipoo from House of Pups at Still Rd in Apr 2020. First time dog owner who lives alone with no other pets. Maltipoo pup was scratching when i got him which pet store operator dismissed as 'due to dog pimples'. However, vet diagnosis revealed that puppy was suffering from ear mites and roundworms. Overall: As I looked around for quite a bit before deciding on House of Pups, i am able to objectively compare the experience across several of the renowned pet shops i visited (~4-5 reputable shops in singapore). Reason I chose House of Pups eventually was due to the chemistry I had with the pup as well as the limited availability of my choice breed. What's good: - Overall friendly atmosphere, allows petting upon sanitisation which is important for assessing chemistry with dogs - Reasonably priced for local breeds as they have their own farm and breeders (unable to verify as farm is not open to public) - Carry a variety of breeds What's not so good: - The condition and health of the dogs. As mentioned above, I overlooked my skepticism of my puppy's scratching due to repeated assurances from pet shop operator that this is 'normal behavior due to dog pimple' and will 'get better with time', which was a total regret once my vet diagnosed the ear mite infection. I also requested for basic grooming to be done for my puppy but the shop failed to clip his nails, trim his paw fur, clean his ears (basically nothing was done) and i had to do it by myself (with the help of an experienced dog owner friend). Whilst grooming, we discovered TWO brown dog ticks - which naturally shocked us given that they were in obvious areas (one on chest, one on head) and the puppy was clearly not checked before handover. Pup also vomited two roundworms when pet shop claimed deworming was done. - The response from the pet store operator. After the vet visit, i pinged the operator to let him know there could be a potential ear mite issue with the dogs at the shop, and also to confirm again that the dog parents had no allergies. I've appended the conversation screenshots below for viewers to draw their own observations, but my perspective is that the overall attitude was not in line with what i expected from a responsible pet store operator. Requesting dog owners to 'cure and do it yourself' is just not appropriate advice and dismissing ear mites (which can lead to permanent hearing loss in long term) as 'really common' strikes me as a cavalier reaction to an important issue - The handover process itself. While at other pet shops, they took care to explain to me what's required in the initial days of bringing the dog home including health checks, potential issues, current condition, overall behavior of the pup, very little of such explanation was being done at House of Pups, although one small gesture they did upon my request was to provide some existing kibbles for transitional feeding - Lack of transparency about condition of parents nor any health checks/certificates. Some other pet shops do provide a comprehensive health check eliminating common hereditary issues, which definitely help provide ease of mind. My overall advice for potential dog owners who are looking to get a pup from House of Pups is to really carefully consider all of the above and ensure you are informed when making the decisions. I am writing this in the hopes that my experience can help future dog owners as I now wish on hindsight that I had this piece of information before deciding. I am also a firm believer that responsible reviews from consumers can help improve transparency with sellers and improve the overall standards of Singapore's pets, pet owners and pet sellers. If you have any questions about my experience, please leave a comment. I will receive notifications and can respond. Thanks. I hope this helps.
