Jazz improvisation has a steep learning curve and can be frustrating for beginners. The encouragement that Mr Soh gives and his take and approach in teaching this "hard to acquire" skill has been very beneficial in my journey in jazz piano. Jazz Piano School is an ideal place for learning music and I believe Mr Soh would add value and impart new skills regardless of whichever level you are at. An excellent school with an excellent teacher.

Under his tutelage I have learnt a number of jazz pieces and am currently learning repetoire from the great crooner, Nat King Cole! Whenever I'm at lessons I'm transported to the Jazz world and back again. I'm grateful that I've crossed paths with teacher Victor - someone who is able to break down the musical score into smaller musical fragments - it's so easy to learn pieces in this manner. ?

As a student who has always enjoyed playing jazz but never fully committed to the genre, I was skeptical as to whether I would enjoy this style of playing. Victor completely blew away these doubts and I am loving exploring this new style of playing. I am extremely happy I took the step and started taking these lessons and look forward to continuing.

I played mostly classical piano growing up, turned up at the school one day and asked Victor to teach me jazz piano. My musicianship took a turning point, two years on and there is still so much to learn from him. I must also add that my young son accomplished little and lost interest in piano lessons from two prior teachers, took six months of lessons from Victor and cleared ABRSM Grade 3 practical. That was his first exam. These speak volumes of Victor’s ability to drive passion and instill confidence in his students!

While jazz music often sounds very complex, Victor is able to break down each piece of music into parts such that it is easy to learn. He is also a very encouraging teacher who makes learning fun. Do look for him if you want to pick up jazz piano!

Victor has been downloading his amazing jazz piano skill to me through a good combination of memorisable bite-sized technique, some readings and gradually increasing challenges with songs which are fun to learn. Highly recommend Victor for anyone who wants to jump into jazz piano - regardless of your initial piano background!
