With a heavy heart, I’m writing my first ever one-star review. There were many “firsts” I experienced today - first time being called “stupid”, first time being threatened of to be reported to the police, first time being filmed close to my face without my consent, first time being shouted at, first time being both mentally and physically abused to the extent that I had to take 12hrs to calm down, all because I came to this place to volunteer my time and love for the cats. The cats and fellow volunteers are super lovely, but the 55/56 year old woman who’s running the place, by the name Jessica Seet, is toxic. She’s also behind the sibling organization Kitten Sanctuary, which is down the same street. Despite being punctual and willing to take on any tasks, the only “mistake” I was probably accused of was showing some empathy to another fellow volunteer who were cornered and had to leave under enormous pressure. I merely wanted to make sure she was alright, while Jessica’s priority was to get the “starving” cats fed. Her “love” for cat wasn’t genuine either. She raised voice multiple times in front of the cats knowingly it can cause anxiety to the cats and she applied brutal force onto the cats when she couldn’t force the volunteers or the cats into what she expected them doing. While I was determined to honor my commitment despite all the mental stress, I was ordered to leave Jessica’s premises this morning with her harsh tone, and was removed from the Sat volunteer WhatsApp group immediately without explanation. If you are considering becoming a volunteer at this place, please give it a second thought unless you want to challenge your own tolerance towards a hostile working environment. If you are still unsure, you may go to Kitten Sanctuary’s page and check out all the one-star reviews then choose what you want to believe, because the non-owner self-claimed “volunteer” Jessica will try her best to distort any truth under the mask of non-profit organization, just as what this post will be treated too. Update(13 Feb 2022) I was looking forward to see how Jessica would distort the fact this time, and unsurprisingly, she replied promptly using the lame excuse “gossip”. The fact is, the only “gossip” I said was “we should play some music in this place”, but her own insecurities led her to believe every discussion taking place in her premises is about her. After working for a number of years, I think I’m mature enough to criticize someone in front your face instead of wasting time “gossiping”.

This is a cat lovers dream. The cats seem very well taken care of and loved. Volunteers were able to share how many of the cats were rescued and their background stories.

I was a volunteer looking to do this long-term. Good: This is for a good cause, so I was excited about this opportunity. The cats are adorable. Other volunteers are really nice. Bad: Everything else. The person who runs this place, Jessica, creates a toxic and abusive work environment. You will be screamed at, disrespected and verbally abused. There is no proper briefing or training. You are expected to refer to long list of tasks on Whatsapp and do things the way she expects. If not, you will be berated, even for small things. The volunteers try to make it work - there was a particularly bad week where she was in a foul mood and screamed non-stop, but still I tried to bear with it and not take it personally. The last straw came two weeks later after being snapped at again for no reason - I had had enough so I spoke up and decided to leave. This was when she started getting more hostile and resorting to personal insults. She sarcastically thanked me and called me "useless". She also swore at me as I left because she thought I was trying to break a gate on purpose (I was rough because I wanted out of there, the gate was fine. So dramatic for what.) She followed me down the stairs to hurl more insults at me, told me to reflect and called me a "psycho" (the IRONY). She also later kicked out a volunteer who tried to defuse the situation. I wanted to stick it out for at least the min. 3-month commitment for the cats, but it was not worth sacrificing my mental health. I understand it is not easy at all to run a shelter but the way she treats volunteers is completely unacceptable. Read the countless 1 star Google reviews for the sister shelter, Kitten Sanctuary, and judge for yourself. If you are looking to volunteer, choose a shelter that would actually value your time and effort. Worst volunteering experience ever. Edit 13 Feb: In response to Jessica's comment, firstly, I was not trying to damage the door, I was using the knob to open it! Secondly, I did talk to visitors and other people will attest to this. "Your volunteer" might not even be specifically referring to me because I have heard her yell this at someone else but even if it was, it does not excuse the abuse and name-calling. Anyway, I've said my piece, and it is consistent with others' negative experiences. Good luck.

Just went there this morning at 11.40 am. It is a place that is like no other animal shelter. Volunteers work there and take care of the cats, and the entry fees ($20) goes to the food and medicine for the cats. The cats are friendly to humans and like to be held, and they are cute and furry. I think that if you are an animal lover, then you should go there.
