β β β β β Recently joined United Muay Thai gym as my previous gym was recently closed for relocation. I came across this gym through a Facebook ad and went for a free trial class.
Itβs located in a really good spot along Thomson Road which isnβt hard to find. I reached an hour early as I wanted to observe its surroundings and had observed a neat, clean, bright, cozy gym ( not too big neither too small) and I was warmly greeted by their trainers and chief trainer Aloysius.
Training was good as they will study your strengths and weaknesses during conditioning training and pad work. I personally feel that it is a good place to pick up this art of Muay Thai as they are willing to teach you the proper techniques and is willing to mould you to do the best that you can with time, but of course it comes with effort and a little nagging or scolding by the chief trainer himself if you arenβt able to get it to his standards of approval despite the repeated guidance which I feel it is good as at the end of the day itβs nothing personal as one has to just take it with a pinch of salt during training. But if you choose to be praised and buttered with lovely words and asking you to take your time which I feel, will ultimately be wasting your time and money.
I had attended a few more lessons over at United Muay Thai gym thereafter and I observed that the trainers and chief trainer Aloysius are dedicated in what they do when it comes to training. I would certainly recommend others who is willing to be committed to training, to come over to give this place a shot.
Do bring your own towel if you choose to shower after training.

β β β β β Very very bad experience, instructor was really impatient at teaching, always chatting and gets frustrated, blames me when I did it incorrectly when he himself is not even teaching properly. Additionally, very unprofessional, always bringing his outside life into training, whenever he is in a bad mood he brings it into the class. Instructor if you are seeing this, hope you can reflect and improve, Marcus here btw

β β β β β TLDR: Go at your own risk, especially if youβre a beginner
I was utterly shocked by the coach's blatant display of disrespectful behaviour on my subsequent 2nd and 3rd lesson. I recalled my 2nd lesson for constantly being criticised slow. I tried to clarify on the moves but many of the times the coach was unapproachable and impatient. Initially I thought perhaps it was just this lesson but the 3rd lesson was the last straw.
Having difficulty tying the handwraps, I approached the coach for assistance. However, I was shocked at his curt attitude. Subsequently, as we were practicing our moves I was repeatedly being singled out for being a βslowβ learner. Instead of correcting my form, he chose to focus on calling me out and even made personal attacks saying βAre u an idiot?β in front of the whole class and even questioned my willingness to learn.

β β β β β Learning muay Thai at united for a long time. It takes years to see how much we had grown, Instructor is strict and can be demanding but it depends on self tolerance level if you can learn from him or break under him.
Totally good experience for me and my buddy. We GAIN more than loss! Good JOB united Muay Thai.

β β β β β Aloysius was very sincere in teaching. He will take you through slowly and ensure that you are practicing the right movements. Lesson was good, interesting and funny too

β β β β β The place has a warm atmosphere. The head coach, Aloysius, is friendly with most students around him and is witty with a quick joke or two to keep the class warm and alive. Despite his friendliness with most part of his classes, his impatience can make the gym seemingly an unsuitable place for beginners, such as myself. Aloysius can, at times, be lacking in feedback regarding footwork or drills, and excessive in comments regarding topics other than improving my technique, such as complaining about my slow learning being a form of arrogance or his judgements for other martial arts such as Taekwondo and Aikido. The gym is a great place to practice traditional and thorough Muay Thai, though beginners may experience a bumpy start in their journey through martial arts. I have learnt a lot about the basics of Muay Thai at this gym. Thank you United Gym for the brief introduction into the amazing world of Muay Thai!

β β β β β I had been with this gym for 6 years. Yes I agreed instructor is fierce & demanding but this is also for our own good sake to prevent us doing the wrong way & get injured in the end. I had passed the 6 years with endurance & took the training seriously together with my buddy. We both know all the instructors well enough as well as others United Muay Thai kakis. During lessons pay attention to the instructors while they are teaching if do not understand just asked the instructor to show again. Scolding by instructor is inevitable sometimes but do not take it too personally. Prove it to yourself that you will do it better for the next lesson & slowly improved. Lastly I had never regretted that my buddy introduced me to this gym as we had proven ourselves that WE CAN DO IT!
