Ordered a bowl of braised peanut minced pork porridge based off blogpost reviews I found online on “must-trys” at the market (dated 2-3yrs back). Spoiled ingredients - To my surprise it tasted funny with a sour taste on my first bite. I went on to try a few mouths more and realised the sourness came from their braised peanuts, which I suppose went bad. My partner had a taste and agreed the porridge tasted strange. “Added” ingredients too - while I tried to “salvage” the bowl of porridge by picking out the spoiled peanuts, I discovered a short piece of black hair… At this point I gave up and stopped trying altogether. ☹️

Today taobao porridge from 88 congee from Toa Payoh Lorong 1 food center and market. The porridge texture is very smooth and very much like Hong Kong style porridge. However kind of lack seasoning so the taste is a bit bland for me but the you tiao is very crispy.

Nothing to shout about, porridge does not taste nice and it’s EXPENSIVE… even the usual fried fritters that comes with a bowl of porridge is chargeable here… don’t remember it being this bad, will be my last time here…

Ordered 猪杂粥, paid liao then said not enough porridge, ask me changed to Yee mee. No egg with miserable ingredients charged $5. Normal Yee mee only $4 with egg some more.

Porridge is smooth but little on ingredients. You Tiao is not fragrant. Just an ok bowl of porridge and not outstanding as some reviews had claimed.

Avoid this stall at all cost. Took them 40 minutes to prepare a bowl of porridge. Stall was super busy throughout the lunch period, which explains their tardiness in output but doesn’t explain their understaffing. Porridge is good, probably one of the better ones in the area, but it’s definitely not worth a 40 minute wait. I would only buy this if the waiting time was a maximum of 10 minutes.

I have been craving a good bowl of congee after having hearty bowls at Tim Ho Wan and also Man Zuk lately. So was looking forward to my visit to Congee 88 today. I remember their porridge being scrumptious and satisfying from a visit several years ago. Unfortunately, it was an utter let down. Ordered a fish and century egg congee. But there was barely any fish nor century egg! I felt i was eating plain white congee. Which seems like a raw deal for $4.50 at a hawker centre. I recall this shop used to be run by two men. It was two women at the stall today. Wonder if the vast difference in quality standards is due to different different owners/cooks. Based ok my experience today, i will never patronise this shop again.
