★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The food was fantastic. Be sure to dry the duck, steamed fish and prawn omelette. They also have minced pork which is not easy to find in other food places. The owners are also very friendly and hospitable.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Came around 2pm on a Saturday, they still had fish and some vege dishes but come early for more variety.
They are famous for their steamed fish which we tried and agreed was incredibly fresh, but not worth a whole trip down just for this dish.
Overall, just ok, nothing to shout about...

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Over-rated! We thought that with a 4.3 rating it may be worth our while to check it out. We reached after 11 a.m. and the only dishes available were three types of vegetables and their dark sauce braised dishes like fatty pork, and taukwa (firm bean curd). We ordered braised pig's skin, pig's ears, taupok (fried bean curd), and taukwa. The pig's skin was hairy (yaks!) and the taupok was hard! The fried taukwa was the best but no big deal compared to what we have eaten elsewhere. We paid $18 for the four dishes plus two bowls of porridge. Definitely overpriced and not palatable. What a disappointment!
To assuage our craving for something decent, we ordered a clay pot of turtle soup for $20 from another stall at the opposite end of the coffee shop. No regrets here.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It’s more a Zi Char and the minced meat is really delicious. The dishes are freshly cooked. I have been hearing this place for decade and finally came for the fish.
Came at 12pm and probably due to COVID, the place is quite empty.
This is for 4 pax and ordered Prawn Omelette, Soy Sauce chicken, fish tail, ngo hiang (was told they made only 3 pcs that day), minced meat, braised egg and cabbage.
The food is good but they missed out the braised duck for our order....pity, otherwise might be 5 stars.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Highlights of this stall got to be their fish. I had the seabass in bean paste and it was nicely done. Fish was fresh too. The egg omelette was good but can't really taste the egg. Fish cake goes very well with the porridge. Vege was normal. Meal for 2 was about 16.80

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My go to place for steam fish teochew style or salted soy bean paste. Pricing is comparable to restaurant but you get much better taste value. From giant grouper, lobster, soo mei, chinese pomfret to emperor red snapper, you will be assured of the freshest catch of the day that the owner procured painstakingly. No fancy cooking, yet you can taste sublime umami from these steamed dishes. Many would hv alr mentioned the signature prawn cake, a must order item. Other dishes are very home style cooking and comforting. A pure gem place.

His great-great-grandfather started this Teochew Porridge business on Beach Road several decades ago - that’s what we learnt from the fifth generation young man who served our food. He added that “Choon Seng Teochew Porridge” has been at their current location at Blk. 43 Cambridge Road for twenty-four years. I also witnessed for myself that regular customers don’t even need to state their orders - they just take a seat and food is sent over shortly after. One of them even nonchalantly mentioned he had forgotten to pay the day before and the hawker was super chill about it.
Anyway, I did go a bit mad when ordering and ended up with enough food to feed three (the bill came to about $27) but somehow, @huatkaliao and I managed to conquer the spread.
What was most unusual was the dish of shark meat and its liver. It seems they are purchased from Pek Kio wet market, a stone’s throw away. Both flesh and collagen of the fish were firm and quite chewy, while the liver was softer with an iron-rich creaminess. If you are sensitive to strong smells, I suggest skipping this even though it does come with a housemade dip of plum sauce, chilli, garlic and peanuts that helps to neutralise.
I also picked the following to have with our bowls of plain porridge:

- Bittergourd With Egg - Full of “wok hei”.
- Braised Pig’s Ears - Excellent.
- Braised Egg
- Tau Kwa
- Tau Pok - Always enjoyable.
- Kiam Chye Buay - Theirs is not salty.
- Fish Cake
- Stirfried Chye Sim
- Stewed Cabbage with Tau Kee and Tau Kwa
I liked this stall’s vinegar-sharpened chilli and garlic dip very much - it’s a great complement for all the braised items.
