Food quality is good and I’m sure the Chef is very experienced. And I hate to give it a 2-star. However, the female attendant gave me the impression that she’s there to hard sell which totally ruined the dining experience. She asked us what we (2 girls) would like to have. We mentioned that we’d like some sushi and some other dishes. She then mentioned that she could arrange an β€œOmakase”. We ended up being served a 18 pieces big sushi plate with 2 pieces of oysters only. Sushi is great but too much of anything is not good. Was surprised and disappointed that her β€œOmakase” meant β€œOmakase sushi” because we never mentioned that we only wanted sushi. Their ingredients are imported from Japan, even their vinegar, so they don’t actually need β€˜hardselling’ to attract customers who appreciate and are willing to pay for good-quality Japanese delicacies. We would have enjoyed the dining experience more and ordered more dishes if the attendant could improve on her servicing style. I would only return if the restaurant considers hiring someone else who knows how to approach customers with more sincerity. After all, there are many excellent Japanese restaurants at Cuppage Plaza offering better Omakase and service.

Why was marui sushi renamed to KATAYAMA? I will leave it to you to find out for now....... Firstly, this place is not for the walk-in customers for sure even though you may want to spend. Rude n loud waitress will spoiled your mood and appetite. No proper menu and pricing( was told by waitress the menu price is 20 years ago) be prepared for repricing by the Japanese Boss. Waitress appears to be pushy and Bossy with question like, 'have you been here before' when we were firmed in dealing with her. It's a lousy experience and definitely not worth a try for those of you thinking of going to this place.

A very cosy family style restaurant served by very experienced Japanese Chef. They have daily fresh seafood and you can either order ala cart or Omakase. The food was good and readable prices.. the lady waitress is local and have great service and attitude. Very small restaurant where probably can only house 20 over people with 5 counter seats. Very authentic Japanese food at reasonable price too..

Visited with my family for the first time. Like what most people said, waitress auntie was horribly rude and unhelpful. Menu was in japanese and upon asking the waitress for helf with ordering, she just said 'You guys never check before coming? You guys walk into wrong restaurant is it?' constantly. Obviously did not feel nice. This is Singapore and not Japan, it shouldn't be a surprise that we did not understand Japanese. Even if your menu was in Japanese, she was not willing to translate at all. Kept pressuring us to order more food but when we asked her what do they have, she just told us to read ourselves (we alr mentioned we do not understand japanese...). She kept criticising our 'lack of orders' as well and insisted that 'money should be spent'. If I am paying $30 for 3-4 slices of salmon sashimi, I do not expect to be treated this badly. Made the whole experience extremely unenjoyable. If you have a big budget to spend and would like yo get treated horribly by the middle aged auntie waitress, please visit here.

Traumatizing and frightful experience! Feedback about the older waitress: 1) She was rude and selective in the questions she wanted to answer 2) Menu was only in Japanese, and it didn't help that she could not explain it to us in English 3) She was upset whenever we ordered something from the main menu, and she was trying to get us to order from the special menu 4) She mocked us for sharing food Feedback about pricing transparency: 1) All the items in the special menu had no prices + were only in Japanese + waitress was hard selling special menu items without giving us an indication of prices 2) We were told by another waitress that the appetizers placed on our table when we first set down were free and it became $4/pax 3) Even the receipt has no proper indication of the items ordered. Some items just says "Food". We left feeling cheated and preyed on. Receipt attached for reference.

Fish cargo comes in Tuesday and friday. Went on a Thursday so limited fish supply. The chef is really cool but he needs to change the wait staff cos she is very pushy and rude. Ordering food can be really irriating, slow and cumbersome. Cut Quality of the sashimi can also be improved. Unless u are a regular, best to avoid but u can try for fun if u are adventurous.

This restaurant is cosy, small, interesting and not everyone's cup of tea. People will either love it or hate it. Those who love it will keep coming back and that's why they serve a lot of regulars who bring their friends and family members. Those who hate it, obviously won't come back again For me, I enjoyed it and I will come back again if I have the capacity to splurge. Today, I went with someone who had the ability to foot the bill without worrying about the cost, therefore it was enjoyable for us. They have a Japanese boss who is extremely good with his skill and dishes. However, he does not speak much English at all. The waitress is one who loves interacting with the guest and she is loud. One may think she is the lady boss but she is not. She just brings her personality to work so it csn be a turn off for people who wants to enjoy their own meal without any form of disturbance. If u are there, be prepared to interact with her because she knows how to communicate with the boss and everyone else in the kitchen with her Chinese mixed hokkein, mixed English and a bit of Japanese. Tell them what you want ie. Sashimi/sushi/onsen egg/fish/soup/sushi/bittergourd etc and they will prepare it according to what they feel is best. There is no menu so if you want to enjoy ur meal there, u need to first be able to appreciate the waitress. Also, the waitress don't exactly know the name of the fish or different ingredients so if you want to know more about what u are eating, u need to ask the boss or the waitress a few times. Sometimes u still end up a little confused but its okay. More importantly, the food is good Sashimi is premium grade. The kinki fish is number one in Japan which is the best fish I've ever eaten. The bittergourd is fresh and extremely bitter but I enjoyed it. The soup is asari clam soup. Tasty. The desserts are cute ice creams from dondondonki! Oyster is very fresh. Love the deep fried fish and prawn head! Really enjoyed the onsen egg with ikura, uni and seaweed too! The sake is smooth and has a sweet after taste. It is awesome Price for our meal: $531. Very expense to me! But it was a very good meal

It was a great night in this tiny hole in the wall restaurant. Located within a very empty building with vacant spaces all around. Like many of the Japanese restaurants in that building, you need to be part of the inner circle to have an enjoyable time. Need to build up your credentials and earn the pps equivalent to have a good time, great food and order by chatting with the Japanese chef who has been around over 20 years. Menu is open depending on the supply of the day. Just let them know that you like or easier still, what you dislike and allergied to. They will take care of the rest. Be prepared to pay though.
