Exactly on 9 September 2016, we went for a memorable appointment with Dr. Cao Bei 曹蓓 at Yi Sheng TCM Orchard - that we waited for 1 month. Upon sitting down in front of Dr Cao Bei. She was neither polite or welcoming. She did not greet us. And both of us started talking excitedly where she literally shut us off by asking who is the patient here. That’s fine. I started explaining my breathless symptoms and she corrected my chinese words that I am not breathless but having shortness of breath. That’s fine. I did say that I’m not sure as I’m not a doctor. She then went on to say that if you are not a doctor then I can’t treat you. I sensed that she’s a little prejudiced towards me. It could be the little holes on my old t-shirt that she was staring at. I wonder why. Next, I went on to explain that I have insomnia. I go to bed and wake up feeling like I have not slept at all. She asked me how would I know if I have not slept? Of cus, I said I know, it’s a huge the difference. She then gave this non scientific statement that “whether you slept well at night - only god will know” #help I came here with sincerity to get medical advice. But now she is pulling out the god card. Lastly she tap listened to my wrist and her final diagnosis. “You are not suitable to be pregnant and you need to be treated for at least 1 year. But whether I will give you the medication, it will depend on Fate.” (FYI - on the same day I saw another doctor who said, my pulse is good. I'm very suitable to be pregnant. So guys, don't give in to "scare" tactics that some doctors use to get you into unnecessary medication) Clearly. She was wasting my time. Her tone and words were just off putting. I also felt “bullied” in this consultation. So my voice trembled a little, when I said, “it’s okay I do not want your medication” She was taken back. There was a long pause. My husband wrapped his arms around my shoulders. But Dr. CB told him not to. She said that it will only make me pity myself. (What a doctor!) Alright I had no respect left for her. "It's okay" We stood up and left. She even made us wait outside and the reception told us there is no charge today. Well, should there be? Cus there wasn't any sound medical advice given? The following week when my husband went back to work. His colleague (who referred us, her patient too) heard from the doctor and asked us about it. Honestly it was unprofessional of her to discuss about patients with another patient. The reason why I stated a date on this post is because 2 days later. 11 Sept - I got a positive pregnancy test. (When she said I wasn’t suitable to be pregnant for a year) And guess what? Now I have 2 kids and I’m in good health and sleeping well. Once I saw her at Orchard with Dr Sophia. I was still thinking about the apology she owed me. But nah, she doesn’t remember me. I will definitely walk up to her when I see her again. I know she’s famous. But I hope she will treat patients with respect and not throw her weight around them. This is 2020 now. We don't need doctors that behave like in the past. I know a lot of patients put doctors on a pedestal and look up to them. But please don't. Respect should be both ways. Note to Dr Cao Bei, if you feel any part of this review is not accurate, feel free to ask your patient - the one you disclosed our consultation details to...... for my contact. I hope to hear from you.
