It is a total disappointment. A Japanese restaurant with fresh sashimi offering cannot even cut the sashimi properly and correctly and insisted that this is the usual way they are cutting. Ruined my $30/worth of sashimi. It used to be so much better, and I will not go back again.

A Japanese restaurant plus mini-mart that serves authentic high quality food at decent prices. There is a wide selection of Japanese alcohols like beer, whiskey and sake on sale. Lining the wall are posters of native Japanese fish and seafood. Off-the-menu is a large chilled counter of fresh raw fish to choose from that can be served there as sashimi, grilled, sushi, etc. As their tasty sashimi and sushi need no introduction, I implore you to instead indulge in the variety of grilled mackerel. I feel that mackerel is a culinarily misunderstood fish in Singapore that tends to come off as oily or fishy. On the other hand, Sakurayaโ€™s chef does a grill that is filled with umami and has a crispy crust and tender flesh.

Food bucket list checked. Sea grapes. They're pictured with the tofu. Look for the thin green strands. Sea grapes are type of seaweed that looks exactly like a miniature bunch of grapes. Taste-wise, it pops in the mouth like a delicate breath of the ocean. It's a seafood place, so we ordered a fair bit of sashimi. All fresh, and cuts of good quality. The seaweed soup was an unexpected hit, and the mentai aburi bowl was always going to be a crowd pleaser. I liked the fried shishamo (happy to see they had both fried and grilled options), and the fried mochi was good! We wanted to try some Hokkaido specialty red bean soup, but it was sold out. Cooking felt authentic, like we were in Japan. Gets crowded after 6, so eat early!

Had Chirasi Don and Kyoto Don, both at $15 each. Both are decent in taste and not that filling so might want to add 1-2 side dishes for a more filling meal. Lunch time crowd for a weekday is manageable.

A restaurant i frequently visit at West Coast plaza when i feel like having sashimi. The interior is pretty spacious hence suitable for famlies with young children. Quality of food is pretty good for the price tag in my opinion.

On Weekends be ready to queue for an hour. You may pick your own fresh fish of the day and get them grilled. No frill dining hall. While waiting for food to be served, you may also shop at the Japanese corner.
