Peranakan Inn & Lounge - 210 E Coast Rd

As you step into this place it does feel like you’re stepping back a few decades in time. The old tiled walls and antique style furniture sets the mood for a traditional experience. And because it’s Peranakan food, that’s exactly what you’ll get. The flavours are rich and complex and you can almost taste the time and effort it took to prepare them. The chicken stew with the buah keluak nut, which is notoriously difficult to prepare was delicious in its slightly smoky, bitter flavour after you dig out the flavour of course. The Long bean vegetables and prawns were also super tasty as was the thin slices of tangy otah. The rendang beef however was a little tougher than I would have liked and the fried fish was also a bit of chew to get through, but overall the flavours were pretty good. If you’re looking for an authentic Peranakan experience, this place feels like it hasn’t changed in years, which in all honestly it probably hasn’t.

This is the place I come to, to reconnect to my roots and to experience the richness of Peranakan cuisine. The chap chye, beansprouts, long beans and the fried mee, and oh... the kueh pei ti, are all very very good. Even though I've turned vegetarian, I still come here to order the baba food I love; I simply asks them to remove the meat, and they happily comply. A little shrimp, anchovies and squid here and there is not a problem. 95% of my diet is compassionate, so don't sweat the small stuff (we don't have to be a purist). You will not be disappointed with the menu, all the usual stuff: itek tim, chili pomfret, ayam buah keluak, assam prawns are our usual baba fixes, and they are goooood! I could see that they have new young blood running the restaurant, both service and kitchen staff. And I'm really happy... because our culture is fading out. The food is our strong hold to keep our history from China to Malacca--alive. Most of all, the ambience of the place; this is their trump card. You have a "homely" experience when you dine there, especially when you eat with your hands!

I had a great meal there. It was a Thursday and fairly quiet. Chatted a little with the friendly owner Chef Seah. Who even took the time to cook a plate of vegs for us. The decor was iconically peranakan and comfortable. Overall cosy vibe. Deserves more credit. The food was homely and familiar! Love it!

I’m genuinely puzzled this place isn’t rated much much higher. We went there and were stunned by how impeccable the food was, immediately made a reservation to bring my family. Brought them all and everyone agreed it was easily the best peranakan they’ve had! One of my favorites in the area, hands down. Rendang, flawless. Fish head curry, my mouth filled with saliva recalling it. Desserts, give me allllll of them. Can’t wait to be back!

Authentic Peranakan restaurant that serves delicious food and has a very cosy ambience fit for all occasions. This restaurant deserves more than a 5-star review and I will definitely come back again. A 10/10 must visit and a 10/10 must come again.

A casual, homely, non pretendious yet warm and interesting. We did not order too many dishes but all were yummy. Was intrigued especially with how the added design using coconut milk to the pulut hitam gave it a wow factor

Nice and Cosy and full of Peranakan feel. However, the place is quite small, so not meant for big big groups. Food really remise me of the food from my Grand Aunt food. Worth a try.
