This chicken rice stall has made me a convert to steamed chicken. Everything is on point at this stall. Super tender and tasty steamed chicken. Roast chicken ( deep fried) version is available too. Rice is fragrant yet not oily. Chilli is spicy & minced ginger delicious. The point of difference here is addition of pickled vegetable. This adds a fresh twist to your chicken rice experience. A very good buy for takeaway :- half a chicken ($13 ) with gizzards comes with separate packets of chilli, ginger, sauce and pickled vegetable + 4 packets of rice. $15.40 value enough for 4. Queues can get long but dont be deterred cos it moves. Payment mode: cash, PayNow, PayLah! Highly recommend to try and be convinced.

The white chopped chicken is tender, springy, and the chicken rice is fragrant and not greasy. Chili, minced ginger, and sauerkraut (which is the specialty of this restaurant) are just right. Reasonably priced at $13 for half a chicken. Pack half a chicken + 4 packs of chicken rice, enough for 4 people. Must try...

I’m always very perplexed to find long, very long at times, queue at this stall. I always asked, how different can this place be from other very good chicken rice stalls? And I never have been able to bring myself to queue for over an hour for chicken rice.... Recently I managed to be at Tiong Bahru earlier than usual and I managed to get myself third in queue at 10.30am, as the shop was slowly getting into business. Prices are affordable, at $3.80 for a plate of chicken rice (drumstick/thigh meat). The taste put me back a bit. It was magical, and the overall flavour was good. Not that it has to rely on the chilli sauce or the black sauce etc, but the combination of good silky chicken with preserved vegetables, coriander plus some special homemade transparent sauce over a plate of fragrant yet not oily rice made this a perfect combo! Well recommended!

What makes a good chicken rice? The soup must be tasty, the chili must have that spicy kick, the rice must be flavorful and the chicken must be fresh and succulent (without that strong poultry blood taste that is sometimes present - depending on where one orders). By that definition, this legendary stall serves one hell of a chicken rice. Is it the best in Singapore? Perhaps not. But consistency is a quality of its own and having been a loyal customer for almost 8 years, they ace that department in spades.

Chicken Rice (SGD $4.50) @ Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice. . Hawker Cheong Weng Wah still helms this brand, known for being among the earliest pioneers (since 1988) of the ice blanch technique which renders optimal tenderness of the chicken meat and silkiness of the skin. . Both poached and roasted versions are equally popular, having clean meaty sweet savoury flavour, with the tender moist succulent texture of the chicken. The gravy lends a light salty savoury herbal taste, yum. . The fluffy rice is fragrant with grainy sweet herbal spice notes, having been infused with ginger, garlic, red onions, and spring onions. . A duo of vegetables, juicy cucumbers and crunchy pickled mustard greens, with vegetal salty sweet earthy herbal flavour, are served alongside. Completed with the trio of dipping sauces.

#02-82 Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice 中峇魯海南起骨雞飯 Just to the right of the escalator of Level 2 is Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice. This stall is hugely popular with a queue forming even before they begin service. Having been on the Michelin Bib Gourmand Singapore Award list for more than 3 consecutive years, a visit to try their offerings was a must. They serve both white steamed chicken and roast chicken. For the uninitiated, the chicken in chicken rice if served warm means that it did not go through a ice chilling process, while if it had went through the ice chilling process the chicken will be served cold but one will then get to enjoy the jellied layer of chicken fat between the skin and the flesh. There is nothing wrong with the dish if your chicken meat is served cold, just different offerings from different hawkers. Popular stalls usually do the ice chilling process so if you don't like your chicken cold, perhaps you got to get your chicken rice fix from a less popular stall. An order for half chicken was made as well as an order for chicken feet, which had been de-boned. The meat here was so tender and the skin was juicy and moist. It was so yummy just eating it on its own. The ginger and chicken stock soup was yummy but don't go drinking it at one go as it can be a little salty by itself, it needs some rice to balance the flavour. The chicken feet was all the collagen goodness with a wonderful chewy feeling that one could enjoy for days. Prepared in a zesty way helped to make it all the more refreshing. A stall that is definitely on par or even better than the other chicken rice stalls on the Michelin Bib Gourmand Singapore Award list. General Verdict: Yummy and succulent chicken that makes a simple dish of rice and chicken taste so good and worth a visit if in the vicinity Opening Hours: Daily 10am-8pm (Closed on Mondays) Queue Situation: About 15 mins to 30 mins Prices: SG$3 upwards Payment Mode: Cash and PayNow only Is this worth a try? Yes Is it worth making a trip just to try it? Probably Is this worthy of the Michelin Bib Gourmand Singapore Award? Unsure Items Ordered: 1) Item: Steamed White Chicken 白斬雞 - Half Serving Description: Succulent meat with moist skin that matches so well that each bite was a joy. May want to request for the sauce to not be drizzled over as it can be a little heavy handed resulting in the chicken being too salty Verdict: Good, Can Order Price: SG$12 2) Item: Steamed Fragrant White Rice Description: The rice here is a little less fragrant than typical fragrant white rice as it lacked the chicken stock and pandan fragrance Verdict: Acceptable, Order only if you want to Price: SG$0.50 3) Item: Clear Chicken Stock - A clear soup made from the chicken stock Description: This soup was a little thin and was more water than chicken stock Verdict: Acceptable, Served for free with order Price: Free 4) Item: Chicken Feet - Chicken feet that has been de-boned and mixed with vegetables Description: A zesty and refreshing salad like style that makes this collagen filled goodie really yummy and chewy Verdict: Good, Can Order Price: SG$3
